BACKGROUND: The current knowledge about occupational allergic diseases among greenhouse workers is scant. AIMS: To describe greenhouse workers' occupational allergic diseases. METHODS: We identified 28 greenhouse workers with occupational allergic diseases in 2002-2020 by conducting a systematic search in the patient register of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. All the patients worked in tomato- or cucumber-growing greenhouses and showed immunoglobulin-E-mediated sensitization to occupational agents. Specific inhalation challenges or workplace peak expiratory flow monitoring confirmed occupational asthma (OA), nasal allergen challenges confirmed occupational rhinitis (OR) and open skin tests confirmed occupational contact urticaria (OCU). RESULTS: Most patients had more than one occupational disease and were sensitized to several workplace agents. Tomato plants were the most common cause of occupational diseases and induced 22 allergic diseases in 14 patients. Cucumber plants caused occupational diseases in 10 patients (3 OA, 7 OR and 6 OCU). The pest control mite Amblyseius swirskii and a mixture of parasitic wasps Encarsia formosa and Eretmocerus eremicus both induced two OA cases. Three patients had an occupational disease caused by storage mites and three others had a work-related systemic reaction to a bumblebee sting. CONCLUSIONS: The greenhouse workers typically suffered from several occupational allergic diseases and were sensitized to cultivated plants, various pest control organisms and storage mites. All these can cause OA and OR, but in this study, OCU was only induced by cultivation plants. Cucumber plant is a novel cause of OA and OR, and A. swirskii is a novel cause of OA.

We study the equivalence between the recently proposed finite environment quantum jump model and a master equation approach. We derive microscopically the master equation for a qubit coupled to a finite bosonic environment and show that the master equation is equivalent to the finite environment quantum jump model. We analytically show that both the methods produce the same moments of work when the work is defined through the two-measurement protocol excluding the interaction energy. However, when compared to the work moments computed using the power operator approach, we find a difference in the form of the work moments. To numerically verify our results, we study a qubit coupled to an environment consisting of ten two-level systems.

RESUMO

Measuring the thermodynamic properties of open quantum systems poses a major challenge. A calorimetric detection has been proposed as a feasible experimental scheme to measure work and fluctuation relations in open quantum systems. However, the detection requires a finite size for the environment, which influences the system dynamics. This process cannot be modeled with the standard stochastic approaches. We develop a quantum jump model suitable for systems coupled to a finite-size environment. We use the method to study the common fluctuation relations and prove that they are satisfied.

We extend the quantum jump method to nearly adiabatically driven open quantum systems in a way that allows for an accurate account of the external driving in the system-environment interaction. Using this framework, we construct the corresponding trajectory-dependent work performed on the system and derive the integral fluctuation theorem and the Jarzynski equality for nearly adiabatic driving. We show that such identities hold as long as the stochastic dynamics and work variable are consistently defined. We numerically study the emerging work statistics for a two-level quantum system and find that the conventional diabatic approximation is unable to capture some prominent features arising from driving, such as the continuity of the probability density of work. Our results reveal the necessity of using accurate expressions for the drive-dressed heat exchange in future experiments probing jump time distributions.

In skin biology, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in inflammatory matrix remodeling, neovascularization, wound healing and malignant transformation. Psoriasis is histologically characterized by keratinocyte hyperproliferation, infiltration of inflammatory cells, neoangiogenesis and production of cytokines, such as TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, TGF-alpha, and IFN-gamma, also capable of regulating MMP transcription. To investigate the role of stromelysins-1 and -2, matrilysin, metalloelastase, collagenases-1 and -3 and 92-kDa gelatinase as well as their inhibitors, TIMPs-1 and -3, in psoriasis, we performed in situ hybridization using 35S-labeled cRNA probes on 29 psoriatic lesions and 9 samples of normal looking skin from psoriatic patients. Metalloelastase mRNA was detected in 21/27 samples in macrophages that had migrated into the epidermis or in the inflammatory infiltrates of the superficial dermis. A quantity of 92-kDa gelatinase was found in macrophages and neutrophils (25/27). Stromelysin-1 mRNA was detected in basal keratinocytes in 4/21 lesions. Intracellular laminin-5 immunosignal in basal keratinocytes of the same samples, suggested that stromelysin-1 might participate in remodeling of the basement membrane zone. No signal for stromelysin-2 or collagenase-3 was found and only sweat glands were positive for matrilysin. TIMP-1 was more abundantly expressed than TIMP-3 in the inflammatory infiltrates and endothelial cells of dermal papillae (22/29). TIMP-3 was expressed perivascularly in 9/16 samples. Our results suggest that overexpression of the investigated MMPs by keratinocytes is not associated with psoriasis. However, macrophages express MMPs in psoriatic skin. Also TIMPs, particularly TIMP-1, were abundantly expressed, suggesting that mere MMP overexpression is unlikely to contribute to psoriatic tissue changes.

A susceptibility gene for psoriasis, a chronic skin disorder, resides in chromosome 6p near the HLA-C locus. Sequencing of the region has allowed the identification of a new gene, HCR. We found that HCR is highly polymorphic with at least 12 coding variants. An association study of the new HCR polymorphisms and the previously suggested susceptibility alleles HLA-Cw*0602 and corneodesmosin allele 5 (CD*5) with psoriasis revealed a specific HCR variant associated with psoriasis susceptibility. However, the HLA-Cw*0602 allele was rarer in controls and associated with a stronger relative risk. Association analysis did not support CD*5 as a psoriasis susceptibility allele in our sample of patients (n = 100) and population-matched controls (n = 93) from an isolated population. We found HCR to be overexpressed in keratinocytes of psoriatic lesions compared with paired samples of healthy skin. Our results suggest a potential role for HCR in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
